4.
Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when ‘ust in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door.

translation It was already late autumn. Although it was not too late, the sun already appeared tired and sallow. However, the autumn foliage was brighter than ever against the sun. Every yellow leaf looked like a gold dancing shoe, dancing in short quick steps in the wind. Some leaves, when reaching the climax of their performance, stopped unexpectedly and whirled down to the ground in a gracious manner. The closer my car approached to the heart of the mountain, the narrower the road became, and the trees closed in on us. Because I was such a short distance from the autumn trees, it came to me that they were not worth watching. The autumn trees, although appearing colorful from a distance, were in fact a bunch of withered branches and dead leaves, giving me a sense of chaos and desolation. Other things might be the same. Diamond Sutra says, ” Dreams, bubbles, hoar-frost, or clouds are just illusions. So is all conditioned existence to be seen.” The quote is really thought-provoking. I used to think that those who dealt with metaphysics were just trying to mystify others, and that they were cocooned in their thoughts. However, after having accompanied Bingwen through his illness and death, it is hard for me to say what is stupid behaviour or blind passion, and what is reasonable and sensible. The question has yet to be answered.

translation The higher Bingwen’s attainments, the humbler he became. I gradually realized that lots of people had been influenced by him. His fellow Buddhists flocked to his house on the day he died. When they arrived, they just put their palms together as a friendly greeting, and then surrounded Bingwen’s remains and recited Buddhist chants. An atmosphere of solemnity filled the house. They were sad but not sentimental about his death. Although extremely touched by the sight, I was reluctant to join them. So I took a copy of the Amitabha Sutra from the shelf and read in the corner. Still, it was not able to inspire me. According to the Ch’an School, “no awakening is possible without doubts.” I was mystified why I couldn’t be awakened whereas others had no doubts about Buddhism.

translation As we approached our destination, the road became steeper and steeper. On the previous slopes, the car already showed signs of impatience. Right now, I was driving up another steep slope. No matter how hard I stepped on the gas, the car just gave a persistent cough and was reluctant to speed up. The discovery that it might quit really scared me because it was late and we were in a wild mountain region. If the car broke down, there was nothing I could do about it. When I was thrown into a panic, someone sitting in the back seat started to chant the rhyming six-syllable chant of Avalokitesvara, “Om mani padme bum.” The chant was indeed pleasing to the ear, but I thought to myself that perhaps it was too late to ask for help from the gods. However, the car suddenly gave a big yell. It juddered for a while, and then, to my surprise, managed to climb up the slope. Was it a coincidence or a miracle? I was mystified and, indeed, I was uncertain.

translation After following the twists and turns of the hill, we arrived at Chuang Yen Monastery. Bingwen preached his beliefs by setting an example for others. Those who received his preaching were gradually changed even without noticing it. I used to ask him for advice, and argue with him, too. I did not think that I was influenced by him. But, in fact, I was drifting from atheist to agnostic, especially feeling very curious about Buddhism. Out of strong curiosity, I visited the Chuang Yen Monastery several years earlier just after it was established. This, then, was my second trip. The monastery looked more elegant than before. From the schedule posted on the door, I found many of the events were discussions on Buddhism. Suddenly, I felt very glad because this differentiated Chuang Yen Monastery from other temples that only had images for Buddhist followers to worship. I tapped the door knocker. A nun answered the door immediately so we were not kept waiting at that door.
