台灣英文教育失敗的主要原因，其一是升學主義 (考試主義) 作祟，其二是英語學習內容與國外實際生活脫節。在台灣學習英文時，通常是死背單字，頂多加背一兩個例句，所學的英文完全沒有前言和後語，以致於在實際運用的場合常會瞠目結舌，不知如何與老外應對。

版主今天就來講解一則老美的脫口秀，名為 “motherhood” (擔任母親的角色)，內容是關於婚姻方面的趣事。脫口秀演出者的特色頗能善用 “lateral thinking” (橫向思考) ， 隨意 (其實應該是事前刻意想好) 說出人意表的言詞 (unexpected lines) 。版主稍微整理關鍵單字，希望能幫助有興趣的網友聽懂脫口秀內容。

 

 

 

1. figure out = 理解 / 想出 (think about a problem or situation until you find the answer or understand what has happened)

2. domestic violence = 家庭暴力 

3. He beats me. But if I leave him, he’ll kill me. 
(我老公打我，但我要是離開他，他會殺了我。)

4. Some marriages were meant to last forever.
(有些婚姻注定要天長地久。) 

5. tacky = in bad taste ; cheaply vulgar; tasteless 噁心；模樣寒酸
Who does that any more? Just bad form. (這年頭還有誰幹這種事？真是奇怪。)
bad form = 不合時宜的 (behaviour that is considered socially unacceptable)

6. “get well soon” card
(祝你早日康復的卡片)
(版主註解) 其實，有時說 get well soon 的時候，根本是看到對方已經很慘，或是認定對方所患的病壓根不會好的敷衍安慰。
get well soon = What you say when someone (something) either fails misrerabally or has no chance whatsoever of recovering.  

7. I’m so out of the baby mindframe = 我壓根都沒有想過 (生) 小孩的事情  

8. a friend of mine = 我的 (一位) 朋友
(版主註解) 網友請注意，老美在說我的朋友時都是這種說法，比較少說 my friend。

9. mature / immature = (思想) 成熟 / 思想幼稚   

10. Target = 美國一家販賣電器與日用品的量販店

11. adopt = 認養

12. shelter = 動物收容所

13. turn  out = 結果是 (通常是出乎意料之外的結果)
to happen in a particular way, especially one you did not expect 

14. heroin = 海洛因

15. dig through = 翻遍

16. get high = 吸毒來謀取快樂

17. ASPCA = American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (美國防止虐待動物協會)
