淺談英語錯誤 (1)

以下是「實用大學英文寫作會話文法(上)」(顏斯華先生著) 的一段節錄:

在書林出版社所出的一本名為「我如何學英語 – 台灣四十位英文高手採訪實錄」的書中,有一位受訪的魏先生有如下這麼一段談話:「有一次和一位外國人吃飯,他離開座位一會兒。回來後,我問他,Where did you go? 他說,「你是問我昨天還是前天去哪兒?」我當時就醒悟如果我耍問某人他剛剛去哪兒,我應使用現在完成式問:「Where have you been?」

由於魏先生的 Where have you been? 畢竟沒有說出口,我們無法知道,他這麼說之後那位外國人是否也會為之楞一下。我想這位外國人之所以會楞一下原因在於,他可能「昨天」和「前天」都有去某處,而這一「離去」也是魏先生知道的事。由於魏先使用過去簡單式的 Where did you go? 聽來較嚴肅,致使對方可能誤會他在談正事。如果他使用過去進行式的 Where were you going? 就能使對方了解,這只是飯局間的輕鬆對話,而不致產生誤解。至於在上面這一情境中,是否可使用現在完成式,則要看對方離開的時間是否夠長而定。

如果對方只是在吃飯過程中離開一下子就回來,根本就不可能跑哪裡去,問 Where were you going? 則是比較合理的。

兩位號稱「英文高手」的人在討論美國三歲小孩都會的英文,最終的結論 (Where have you been? – 賴先生 / Where were you going? – 顏斯華先生) 還是不正確!殘念。

Where have you been? (Where’ve you been?) – 通常用於與許久不見的朋友寒喧場面,或者抱怨對方為何遲到這麼久。

“Where have you been? You’re one hour late!”
(你去哪裡了?你遲到一個小時!)

“What a surprise to meet you here!” “Yeah, where have you been?”
(真巧,會在這裡碰見你。是啊,這段時間你跑哪裡去啦?)

 

Where were you going? – 是詢問對方過去某個時間正要前往何處,根本不可能用於詢問對方剛剛去哪裡。

“Where were you going and where were you coming from?”
(你當時要去哪裡?你當時又從哪來?) – 警察臨檢或者勘查車禍現場時常問的問題。

 

Where have you just been? – 你剛剛去哪裡?這是英文正確的說法

“Where have you just been?” “I’ve just been out shopping.”
(你剛剛去哪裡?我剛剛去購物。) – 現在

(冷戰結束之後,我們美國人數十年來一直得意自滿,但是這種自信剛剛已經破滅。) – 過去

語言是靠環境累積的,沒聽過的英文說法就是不會用,光靠文法分析仍然會有盲點。前述這兩位英文高手雖有求知欲望,但他們並非從小在自然環境下學習英文 (版主也是如此),最終還是陰溝裡翻船。

– 如果沒有明確標示時間 (如 yesterday),被詢問者有可能會一頭霧水。

– 詢問對方過去在某個時間正要前往何處。

(例句一)
如果你跟某人聊天,言談間他突然作勢離席,卻又返回座位,你便可以問:
It looked like you were leaving. Where were you going? (你好像要離開。你要去哪裡?) 

(例句二)
Where were you going and where were you coming from?
(你當時要去哪裡?你當時又從哪來?)
– 警察臨檢或者勘查車禍現場時常問的問題。
