beachhouse01A holiday home located on a deserted beach, each of the three bedrooms, and the main  living accommodation, are expressed as individual structures connected by a raised timber walkway. The indigenous dwarf tropical dry forest is to provide natural screening between the individual pavilions.


The predominant building form of the islands, being the ‘colonial’ style house with pitched roof and blockwork construction, did not sit well with the Client’s contemporary design aspirations for the building. As a result we allowed the isolation of the site to dictate a new building type.


The elevation was dictated by shallow contours of the site (which are sand ridges) which are depicted by the curved roof section that project beyond the building enclosure. The plan form whilst adhering to the constraints as set out by the local authorities regarding distance of the built form from beach, nevertheless followed a rational grid dictated by the various forms of enclosure as dictated by the brief.

屋舍立面依照場址淺矮的輪廓 (亦即沙丘) 規劃,而輪廓形式則由延伸至屋舍周圍之外的曲形屋頂界定。屋舍規劃遵照當地政府的建築法規,嚴守屋舍與海灘間的法定距離,但屋舍形式依舊依循合理網絡來建構,該網絡是由設計藍圖規劃的包覆方式所決定。 

Various aspects of shelter are provided through a range of enclosure conditions: mesh screens (maintain air movement), louvres within sliding or fixed panels (manipulate natural light, ventilation, storm protection). The elimination of glazing as an enclosing element, in conjunction with the shaded perimeter (bris soleil) maximise openness while eliminating solar gain.

數種包覆方式提供各種遮蔽形式:網狀遮幕 (維持空氣流通) 以及設置滑動或固定窗簾的百葉窗 (調控自然光線、進行通風與阻擋暴風雨)。玻璃未曾當作包覆元素,而且房舍四周設置屋簷 (壁架),因此海灘屋開放到極致並能排除日照的熱能。

The façade system, which consists of a 4’ timber frame module, acts as a filter to the natural environment by adjusting manually to daylight, storm or insect conditions. Privacy and outlook may be selected by the occupant, for example the rear elevation may be opened completely to unite the shower with the natural vegetation which itself becomes an enclosing/delineating element.

屋舍外觀由四英尺的木質框架模組構成,可用來阻隔外界環境,框架可手動調整自然光線,阻擋暴風雨以及隔離蚊蟲。屋主亦可關閉或者開放建物,譬如將後半部完全打開,淋浴間便可與大自然合而為一,而樹叢隨即化身為包覆 /界定元素。

Each roof works in conjunction with a free-standing hopper as water harvesters. This provides for all water consumption, the hoppers resemble a large martini glass, the asymmetrical form responding to the variable flow.


Above foundation level the buildings are 90% prefabricated using Brazilian Oak as the key material obtained from sustainable sources and pre-assembled in Bolivia. A reflection of the need to concentrate specialist skills off-site before reaching this remote location where skilled labour was at a premium. 

地面上百分之九十的建築體皆預先建構,主要建材為巴西橡木 (Brazilian Oak)。這些橡木屬於永續資源,全部皆於玻利維亞 (Bolivia) 預先組合,因為本地人工昂貴,必須先在外地雇工建構技術複雜的結構體,完工之後才將其運到這偏遠之地。
