本篇講解代名詞的翻譯技巧。代名詞如果翻譯得當，譯文將會生色不少。常見的代名詞如下：

1.we, you, he, I, they, one, everyone, those who, he who,

2. each other, one another, both, all,the other, others,

3. man, men, people, some, many, a few, few, a couple of..,

4. no one, nothing

6. none, any, neither.. nor , not all, all

7. my, its, your, our, her , his, one’s, mine, yours, ours, theirs

翻譯時可視情況，將對應的代名詞翻成：自己、我們、你、你們、每個人、大家、人們、人人、某人、某個、有人、一切 、別人、彼此、互相、對方、誰都。千萬不要拘泥於字典翻譯，要依照文義來翻成通暢的代名詞。

 

下面是版主參考過去上課  (王力文教授) 內容所整理出來的例句，中文是版主執筆翻譯，僅供網友參考。

◎  Intellectual blemishes, like facial ones, grow more prominent with age. - François de La Rochefoucauld
心智缺陷如同臉部缺陷，愈老愈明顯。

(解析) 英文用 “ones” 來取代 “blemishes” ，中文得重複翻譯。

 

◎  If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world.  - Francis Bacon
對陌生人親切有禮，才算是世界公民。

(解析) 中文翻譯時省略代名詞 (a man)。

 

◎  Nothing makes you more tolerant of a neighbor’s noisy party than being there. - Fanklin P Jones 
要想容忍鄰居喧鬧的宴會，莫過於自己也去參加。
鄰居的宴會自己若能參加，再吵也能忍受。

(解析) ”you” 泛指「任何人」。
You can’t learn to use a computer simply by reading manuals about it.

 

◎  Usually we praise only to be praised. - François de La Rochefoucauld
誇獎別人，通常會受人稱讚。

(解析) ”we” 泛指「任何人」，中文翻譯時加以省略。
only to - 表示意外或令人失望的結果。
I came back only to find (that) the living room was a mess.
(我回來之後，卻發現客廳亂七八糟。)

 

◎  All men are ordinary men; the extraordinary men are those who know it. - Chesterton
大家都是平凡人，明瞭這點便可超凡卓越。
大家都是平凡人，不平凡的人明瞭這項道理。
所有人都是平凡的，不平凡的人明瞭這項道理。

 

◎  All political parties die at last of swallowing their own lies. - John Arbuthnot
(所有) 政黨最終都會因捏造謊言、自食惡果而敗亡。

(解析) ”all” 可翻成「一切，所有，全部」，但是後面跟著 (都會) 這樣的字眼，因此也可省略 。

 

◎  Marriage, if one will face the truth, is an evil, but a necessary evil. - Menander 
如果 (我們) 願意面對現實，就會知道婚姻是種罪惡，但確是必要之惡。

 

◎  Lovers never get tired of each other because they are always talking about themselves. - François de La Rochefoucauld
情人永遠不會厭倦對方 / 彼此，因為他們總是談論自己。

 

◎  When the candles are out all women are fair. - Plutarch 
燈一熄，什麼女人都美。
熄燈後，所有女人都美。

 

◎  A bachelor is one who thinks he is right. 
單身漢 (這種人) 總以為自己是對的。

(解析) 這是一種定義句型。

 

◎  Politics and church are the same thing. They keep the people in ignorance. - Anon
政治與宗教如出一轍，兩者皆採愚民政策。

(解析) ”they” 不見得非得翻成「它們」。

 

◎  One has the right to be wrong in a democracy. - C. Pepper
在民主國家，人人都有犯錯的權利。

 

◎  We all come down to dinner, but each has a room to himself. - J Arbuthnot
吃飯時大家同桌，但房間卻人人一間。

 
◎  They say John’s daughter ran off with a young guy. 
據說約翰的女兒跟一個年輕人跑了。

(解析) ”they say” 是慣用法，表示人們普遍的看法或觀點。
