One of Noah’s decendants was a man called Abram, who grew up in the city of Ur. He followed his father Terah and moved the family, including his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, to Canaan, but on the way they settled in the city of Haran.

There, Abram and his wife Sarai enjoyed a life of great wealth.  When Abram was seventy-five years old, God said to him, “Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household. Go to the land of Canaan. There I will bless you and make you the father of a great nation.”

Abram left just as God had told him because he had a great faith in God. He loaded all his possessions onto his camels and set out on the long journey with his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all their servants.

When they reached Canaan, God appreared to Abram and said, “To your offspring, I will give this land.” Although Sarai had not been able to have any children, Abram believed that God’s promise would be carried out in the future.

Later, Abram moved to the place between Bethel and Ai.  However, the land could not support both Abram’s and Lot’s flocks and herds. It was proving difficult to find enough grazing pasture for all the animals. Abram’s shepherds started to fight Lot’s shepherds for each piece of grass.

Abram settled the dispute by saying to Lot, “We should split up and go our separate ways.” And he gave Lot first choice as to where he wanted to go. So Lot set off with his flocks for the fertile plain of the Jordan, while Abram stayed in Canaan.

Afterwards, a war broke out. Lot and his possessions were carried off by the four kings involved in the war. One man escaped and reported this to Abram. When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he called out 318 trained men born in his houshold to rescue Lot.

When Abram returned, Melchizedek brought out wine and bread. He was priest of God Most High and he blessed Abram.

After this, God blessed Abram by saying, “Do not be afraid. Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. Look up at the heavens and count the stars. So shall your offspring be.”  Although Abram had no children, he believed in God, and God credited it to him as righteousness.
