Dear Mr. Jackson

As 2009 draws to a close, may I take a moment to say thank you so much for the support you have given us throughout the year.

To show my appreciation for your patronage last year, I’m enclosing a certificate good for one free meal with the purchase of another of equal or greater price.

May all the joys and blessings of Christmas be yours, and all the best to you in 2100!

2. draw to a close = come to a close

3. take a moment to do sth =
As the Christmas reason approaches, I’d like to take a moment to express my appreciation for your partronage last year.

4. patronage =
We thank you for your patronage.

5. certificate =

6. May all the joys and blessings of Christmas be yours.
May all the joys of the holiday season be yours.

7.  all the best to you in …

Dear Angela,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. It’s been almost two years since we last met. Time really flies, doesn’t it?

So how’s the world treating you these days? We are winding down from another busy fall and hoping for a beautiful and serene winter. Whoever coined the phrase “lazy days of fall” ought to have their vital signs checked. I mean, who are we kidding here?

I had a busy fall at the office. I think I would enjoy dentistry a lot more if I didn’t have to make money at it. Also, I’m manager of our softball team this season. It’s one of those things that doesn’t sound like much, and shouldn’t be, but is. I’d rate it about a 9.8 on the headache scale (of 10). The hardest part is collecting money from people for various things and making a lot of phone calls.

Anyway, I just want to write to you and let you know I’m thinking of you and your family on Christmas and remembering all the good times we had together. Tell everybody “Hi” for me, and if Kay has any questions about college, she can write me. I can’t answer them all but tell her the first quarter of the first year is the toughest, and it’s all downhill after that!

Well, that’s all for now. Say hello to the kids for me.

With love,

1. I hope this e-mail finds you well.

2. Time really fles, doesn’t it?

3. How’s the world treating you these days?
版主曾經聽過美國室友說出 “How’s the weather treating you?” Don’t worry!  I brought my umbrellas.

4. wind down = (of a person) relax, stop after a period of stress or excitement

This year has been frantically busy for me. I need a holiday just to wind down.

5. coin the phrase =

6. who are we kidding here?

7. I’d rate it about a 9.8 on the headache scale of 10.

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate yourself as a lover?
  • On a scale of 1 through 10, how would you rate the food at Panda Express?
  • Please rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10.

8.  Tell everybody “Hi” for me. / Say hello to the kids for me.
