多年目睹之台北捷運怪英文 (2)
撰文者: Wayne 發表日期: March 11, 2009 – 6:45 am

今天早上冒著細雨搭捷運上班,坐到市府站時,人潮已經去了大半,乃隨處找個位子坐下,不一會兒,清脆悅耳的捷運英文廣播響起,內容大致如下:

For the ease and comfort of all passengers, please do not sit on the floor or occupy the areas reserved for disabled people.

版主一聽,不覺心頭震了一下,以往在美國留學時,偶爾會被人糾正少用 “disabled” 這個字眼,理由是侮蔑殘障者

根據《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》的解釋,disable = make (sb) unable to do sth esp by making a limb or limbs useless (使殘缺),所以捷運的文法用法都合理。不過,某些殘疾的人不認為自己無能 (disabled),依然可以跟常人一樣做任何事,好比參加殘障奧運。有位老美殘障人士在網路留了這麼一段話:

The use of the term ‘disabled’ to describe a handicapped or physically challenged person always irritates me. I am handicapped and I know that I am certainly not disabled in any way.
(每次看到別人用 “Disabled (無能)” 這個字來形容殘障人士,老子就非常不爽。我是行動不便,但我絕非一無是處。)

所以呢,將 “disabled people” 改成 “handicapped people“、”the handicapped” 、 “physically challenged passengers” 或 “passengers with limited mobility” 就可以安然過關,誰都不得罪。

再說一段題外話,不要叫傻瓜 “stupid” 或 “retarded“,要稱呼他們 “mentally challenged“。電影《阿甘正傳》(Forrest Gump有一句名言:Stupid is as stupid does. (人之所以笨,是因為行為笨。) 網路的講解如下:

Question: What is the meaning of the saying ‘stupid is stupid does’?

Answer: “Stupid is as stupid does” indicates that a person is judged stupid by the stupid acts they commit.

A1. The phrase “beauty is as beauty does” is a common southern expression. It conveys the notion of judging someone on their actions as opposed to superficial appearance. The mom (played by Sally Fields) in the movie Forrest Gump twisted this saying into “stupid is as stupid does” as way of placating her slow-witted son. It is sort of a meaningless expression, and generated a laugh at theaters in the south. The play on phrases was apparently lost in other regions where the original saying was not known.

A2. Stupidity is demonstrated by one’s actions.

A3. It means that although you may be slow, stupidity is based more on your actions than on the speed at which you think.

A4. It means that people think of you as stupid if you act stupid or perform stupid acts.

  1. 看完台北捷運怪英文,讓我打消了坐捷運學英文的念頭,似乎少了生活中學英文的一個地方….
    如果說disabled侮蔑殘障者的意思,算是一個不是很有禮貌的字,那是否有適用的地方呢?

  2. 版主說過,這只是個人觀感的問題,有些人就是會不高興。

    英文字 “Disable” 本意就是指「讓人任喪失能力,或者讓機器、系統或軟體喪失功能」。電腦業界常用這個字,如下例:

I suggest you disable the ‘zoom’ feature on left side of the keyboard.
    (我建議你關閉鍵盤左邊的「縮放」功能。)

    所以 “the disabled” 是正確的用法,只是會觸及某些殘障或者衛道人士的禁忌。

例如:The Taipei City Hall provides good access for the disabled.
    (台北市政府替殘疾人士準備很方便的通道。)

    學英文要從整體概念來學習,不能整天背單字,讀文法,夢想英文可以突飛猛進。
