相信學習英文多年的網友會發現,有些看似簡單的英文單字其實含有另外不同的意思,稍微閃神可能會誤解文意。今天就來講講幾個例子,以下內容絕非抄襲什麼國外單字學習書籍,而是版主在文章中實際遇過的。這些並非大學問,純屬閒聊,有心者可當成小小的提醒。對版主而言,本篇其實是閒暇的筆記。
1. 細節 (small and particular item or fact)
* I need all the details.
(我需要全部的細節。)
2. 特遣隊,小分隊,特勤組 (a group of people, esp soldiers, given special duties)
* the cookhouse detial (營地炊事班)
* He is the chief of the security detail. (他是安全小組的組長。)
1. 派遣;發送
* dispatch a letter, telegram, message (發信,發電報,傳遞訊息。)
* American warships have been dispatched to the area. (美國戰艦已經被派遣到該區。)
2. 給予致命的一擊 (give the death-blow to sb)
* the vet dispatched the injured horse. (獸醫把那匹受傷的馬殺死。)
* Trinity dispatches the agents with gravity-defying kung-fu moves. (Trinity 施展功夫,凌空躍起擊斃幹員。)
1. 元素; 要素
* What a sensational story! It has all the elements of a soap opera.
(多麼煽動人心的故事!連續劇的所有要素它都包了。)
2. the elements - 自然力量或壞天氣 (forces of nature; the weather, esp bad weather)
* Exposed to the fury of the elements (飽受風吹雨打)
* Fans are dressing for the elements. (球迷都因為天氣而穿上大衣。)
1. 宴客;款待他人 (provide food and drink for sb, esp in one’s home)
* I don’t entertain very often.
(我不常在家請客。)
2. 使他人開心 (amuse)
* He entertained us for hours with his stories and jokes.
(他為我們講故事、說笑話,讓我們快樂好幾小時。 )
3. 懷有某事 (hold sth in the mind or feelings)
* Reading the biography of Albert Einstein reinforced my conclusion that no thinking scientist could seriously entertain the possibility of God without committing some sort of intellectual suicide.
(我讀了愛因斯坦的傳記之後,更加確信有理智的科學家如果認為上帝可能存在,便是從事某種程度的理智自殺。)
1. 臉紅;潮紅
* A pink flush spread over his cheeks. (他滿臉通紅。)
* She flushed crimson with embarrassment. (她羞得臉紅。)
2. 沖水(the act of cleaning a toilet with a sudden flow of water)
* Give the toilet a flush. (冲抽水馬桶。)
3. 齊平的 (complete level or even with another surface)
* The door should be flush with the wall. (門應該與牆在同一個平面上。)
4. 同花 (紙牌遊戲) (a set of cards that a player has that are all of the same suit)
* She won with a royal flush. (她以同花大順獲勝。)
1. 堅實的
* The wet ground is not firm enough to walk on. (濕地不夠堅硬,不能在上頭行走。)
2. 公司或商號 (a business organisation, a company)
* Our firm has made 10 workers redundant. (我們公司已經裁減 10 名雇員。)
1. 隱藏 (to put or keep somebody/something in a place where they/it cannot be seen or found)
* The trees hid the house from view. (樹木把房屋遮擋住了。)
2. (尤指買賣或用作皮革的) 皮,毛皮 (an animal’s skin, especially when it is bought or sold or used for leather)
* In the end we selected beautiful hides with great variation in texture. (我們最後選擇質地多樣的美麗皮革。)
Outfit:
1. 全套服裝,裝束 (尤指為某場合或目的)
* She was wearing an expensive new outfit.
(她穿着一身昂貴的新衣裳。)
* a cowboy / Superman / wedding outfit
(一套牛仔裝 / 超人裝 /一套結婚禮服)
2. 團隊 /小組/分隊 (a group of people working together as a team)
* a market research outfit (市場調查組)
* This is the first album by the rock outfit. (這是這個搖滾樂隊的首張專輯。)
Pitch:
1. 比賽場地 (a specially marked out area of ground on which a sport is played) - 英式用法 (= field)
* The crowd invaded the pitch at the end of the match.
(比賽結束後,人群湧入球場。)
2. 音調;音高 (the highness or lowness of a musical note)
* She’s got a good pitch. (她樂感很好。)
3. 投,扔,拋 (throw)
* Fran screwed up the letter and pitched it into the fire. (弗蘭把信揉成一團,扔進火中。)
1. 一行;一排 (a line of things or people next to each other)
* Plant the seedlings in parallel rows. (把這些秧苗插成平行的幾行。)
2. (互為熟悉人之間的) 爭吵 (an angry argument that lasts a short time, especially between people who know each other well) - 主要為英式用法
* The news caused a terrible family row. (這則消息使全家人爭吵。)
* Acer has been refocusing on mobile devices to drive growth after a first half that saw the acrimonious departure of its chief executive following a row over the company’s strategy and a series of cuts to its shipment forecasts. - by Guardian (英國衛報)
(在上半年時,宏碁執行長與公司在策略上理念不合並連續調降出貨量預測而憤而請辭,該公司隨後專注於發展行動裝置來尋求成長。)
1. 勺子;一勺的量 (amount picked up by a scoop)
* The jar was empty after several scoops. (挖了幾勺紹之後,罐子就空了。)
2. 搶先報導的新聞;獨家新聞 (piece of news made public by a newspaper, radio station, before its rivals)
* inside scoop (搶先報/ 內線消息)
1. 比賽的分數 (the number of points, goals, etc. scored or made by each player or team in a game or competition)
* make a good score of 40 (得 50 分的好成績。)
2. 欠賬 (amount of money owed in a restaurant)
3. 總譜 /樂譜 (a written or printed version of a piece of music showing what each instrument is to play or what each voice is to sing)
* the piano score of the opera, eg with the opera music arranged for a piano (歌劇中的鋼琴樂譜)
4. 很多 (pl. scores) (very many)
* Scores of aftershocks jarred Japan Saturday, punctuated by a pair of strong earthquakes in the early morning, including one with a magnitude of 7.1 and another with a magnitude of 6.8.
(日本星期六發生許多餘震,清晨時有兩起強震,一起為 7.1 級,另ㄧ起為 6.8 級。)
5. (電影或戲劇的) 配樂 (the music written for a film/movie or play)
* a stirring film score by John Williams (由約翰威廉斯創作的感人電影配樂)
1. 拼字 (name or write the letters of a word in their correct order)
* How do you spell your name? (你的名字怎麼拼?)
2. 一段時間 (period of time during which something lasts)
* a cold spell in January (一月的一段寒冷時期)
1. 計程車 (cab /taxicab)
* Taxis usually have meters that show how much money you have to pay.
(計程車通常有計時表,表上會顯示你要付多少錢。)
2. 飛機起飛或降落時在地上滑行 (move slowly along the ground before taking off or after landing)
* The plane was taxing along the runway. (飛機在跑道上滑行。)
1. 窗戶 / 像窗戶一樣的開孔
* Please open the window. (請開窗戶。)
* There is a little window on the cassette case so that you can see the tape.
(卡帶上有個小窗,讓人可以看見磁帶。)
2. 一段時間 (a period of time)
* 24- hour window (24 小時的時間。)
