Plays

Alas, how soon the hours are over
Counted us out to play the lover!
And how much narrower is the stage
Allotted us to play the sage!

But when we play the fool, how wide
The theatre expands! beside,
How long the audience sits before us!
How many prompters! what a chorus!

2. alloted =

For the prepositional meanings “over and above, in addition to” and “except” besides is preferred, especially in edited writing. … However, BESIDE sometimes occurrs with these meanings as well.
From: Webester’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language, P. 198.

4. prompter =

5. chorus = 解釋劇情的演員 (the chorus is the group of actors who give explanations or opinions about the play)
