版主覺得很多老美說話非常有趣，喜歡用新奇的比喻來描述事情。版主多年前從事的翻譯專案即將結束之時，美國客戶特意作東，請我們到高級日式料理店吃飯。席間大夥相談甚歡，管理專案的 Mike 在飯局接近尾聲時說了幾句讓大家一頭霧水的英文：

Thanks for all the efforts you’ve put into this translation project. The project has not finished yet, but the fat lady is starting to warm up!  

如果沒有事前理解來龍去脈，很難立刻抓住這句話的笑點。英文口語說法 ” the fat lady sings” (或者相關的變化) 表示什麼意思呢？

網友可能會說，很簡單嘛，不就是肥女人唱歌！這大體是對的，但是還不到位，有點隔靴搔癢的意味。根據版主在網路上查到的資料，在西洋的大歌劇 (Grand Opera) 中，所有台詞都是用唱的，歌劇即將結束時都會有一位身材壯碩的女高音 (soprano) 出場唱歌，這位女高音就被戲稱為「肥女人」(the fat lady)，觀眾只要看到女高音出場便知道歌劇即將結束。因此，肥女人唱歌 = 事情即將落幕。

這種的觀念常被老美用在播報體育新聞，暗指肥女人還沒出場，比賽還沒結束，可別妄下定論。台灣的體育主播如要表達這種意思，經常會用另外一種說法：球是圓的，誰贏誰輸還不知道呢！

網友還記得美國職棒大聯盟 2004 年的賽事嗎？波士頓紅襪隊於美聯冠軍戰先三連敗，隨後卻四連勝擊敗洋基隊取得美聯冠軍，最終獲得世界大賽冠軍，破除了所謂的「貝比魯斯魔咒」。It ain’t over until the fat lady sings!  

It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings is a colloquialism, essentially meaning that one should not assume the outcome of some activity (e.g.: a sports game) until it has actually finished, similar to a common proverb. It is a perception of Grand Opera, typically overweight sopranos, and perhaps Brünnhilda’s final arias from Die Walküre or Götterdämmerung in particular, from an American working class cultural perspective of the early 20th century.

eg. It is now very clear that the fat lady has sung for the economic expansion. The country has slipped into a recession.
eg. The fat lady has sung and left the building. It’s all over.
