英文翻譯練習:Fable – Ralph Waldo Emerson

這首愛默生 (Ralph Waldo Emerson) 的短詩《寓言》以詼諧的口吻來傳達華人常說的「天生我才必有用」的觀念。詩中的小松鼠人小志氣大,無懼於與高山爭論,秉持萬事相互效力的聖經原則,強調萬物不分大小,都是天地的一分子,每個人都其特殊的地位與才能。
 
Fable
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel;
And the former called the latter “Little Prig.”
Bun replied,
“You are doubtless very big;
But all sorts of things and weather
Must be taken in together
To make up a year
And a sphere.
And I think it’s no disgrace
To occupy my place.
If I’m not so large as you,
You are not so small as I,
And not half so spry.
I’ll not deny you make
A very pretty squirrel track;
Talents differ: all is well and wisely put;
If I cannot carry forests on my back,
Neither can you crack a nut.”

高山和松鼠
起了口角;
高山罵松鼠是「狂妄小鬼」。
松鼠答道:
「你的確很巨大;
但萬物與天氣
必須相互效力
才能構成年歲
以及地球。
我絲毫不覺丟臉,
扮演我這個角色。
我雖不如你那般雄偉,
你又何嘗不比我嬌小,
甚至遠遠不如我活潑。
我不否認你能夠構築
一條美麗的松鼠路徑;
天賦不同:萬物皆安排得宜;
即便我扛不起一座森林,
你也無法剝開一粒核桃。」

translation

(說明)

* quarrel = angry arguement often about something that is not important 爭吵;吵架

* prig = a conceited person, who thinks of himself much better than he really is

* Bun – Sometimes a squirrel is called a Bunny, and the short name for Bunny is Bunn (Bun).

* no half as good (as) = much less good than… 遠不如  

* a sphere = the globe or the world 地球

* There is an old saying, ‘It takes all kinds of people to make a world.’

* I think it’s no disgrace to occupy my place. = I’m not ashamed of being a squirrel.

* crack = break the outside part of something, in order to get what is inside it 剝開
