There is a Chinese expression that goes, ” Wealth does not pass three generations.” This expression is used to describe a situation in which the grandfather works extremely hard to start a business and amasses fabulous wealth for the family while the father, blessed with the wealth, tends to relax in his efforts because he can get what he wants without trying too hard, but he at least preserves what was handed down. However, the grandson, born to wealth and free from worries about food, is very likely to dissipate the famly’s wealth recklessly if the parents or the grandparents indulge him too much. If this is the case, the inherited wealth from older generations will soon go to waste. This expression serves as a warning: only by preserving accumulated assests can wealthy families keep their wealth for three and even more generations and to enjoy the fruits of their labor forever.
