1. because
She is in a bad mood becasue her mother won’t let her go to the party.
“This photograph doesn’t look like you.” “That’s because it isn’t mine.”
“Why did you pull me over, officer?” “Because you were speeding.”
2. because of
3. since
用來說明為何要做某件事情,或者建議做某件事情 (used to introduce the reason why you decide to do something or suggest doing something)。
We had planned to play tennis, but since it was raining we decided to go swimming instead.
4. due to
(在正式的場合) 說明失敗或者遇到困難的原因 (used especially in official statements to introduce the reason for a difficulty or failure)。
2: the fact that + 子句 (有些人認為這種句型笨拙且累贅 clumsy and wordy)
Our problems were due to a combination of bad management and bad luck.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we regret to inform our customers that this store will close early.
By now I’m sure you know that due to the economy and other factors RIOY has suffered some huge setbacks in its income over the last few months.
5. as
說明為何某種狀況之所以存在,或者說明為何要做某件事情以及建議做某件事情 (used to introduce the reason why a particular situation exists, why someone decided to do something or suggest doing something)。
As I was doing my homework, my mum prepared my supper. (As = because)
As I was doing my homework, my mum prepared my supper. (As = while)
As he had been in prision for several times, he was a prime suspect for the case.
6. out of curiosity (interest, desperation, etc)
說明某人為何做異於平常之事 (used when someone has done something he would not normally do)。
Just out of curiosity, why did you take that job?
7. on account of
說明困難、問題或失敗的原因 (use when you want to explain the reason for a difficulty, problem, or failure)。
He can’t run very fast on account of his asthma.
8. for
He found it increasingly difficult to read, for his eyes were failing.
Tom’e wife has never discovered that she married a dustman, and she never will, for he has just found another job.
9. owing to
Owing to Princess Diana’s ill-health, her visit to the new school is to be postponed.
10. by (in) virture of
He was awarded a Cross by virtue of his long military service.
