Lose one’s shirt at the track

先查網路,看看老美的解釋:

What does lost his shirt at the track mean?

The phrase “lost his shirt at the track” means that a man gambled so much on the races (horses, dogs, etc) that he spent all his money and had to resort to his clothing for this bets.
Used as an idiom, this phrase means that someone has taken a, perhaps foolish, chance and lost.

原來這個說法跟賭馬 (狗) 有關,指某個人下重注賭馬,結果輸光光,得典當衣服還債。這跟台語的一句話很像:輸到脫褲子。

這個用法也有變化,就是刪除 at the track,只保留 lose one’s shirt

Sample usage:

The poor guy lost his shirt. He invested all his money in a fancy hotel, and it went out of business.

(這個可憐的傢伙投資一間豪華旅館,旅館卻倒閉了,於是他輸光了所有的家當)

translation

Keep one’s shirt on

有些人在衝動時可能會脫衣服和人打架,因此這句話就是勸人要鎮定,不要衝動:

Sample usage:

A: Tell him to leave, or I’ll call the police. (叫他離開,否則我要報警了)

B: Hey, keep your shirt on! Take it easy. (喂,你不要衝動!有話好說。)
